Trail Information

Begin the hike on the Colonel Devin Trail, just across the road from the monument to the Battle of Big Dry Wash, fought July 17, 1882. The four-hour clash, actually took place about seven miles north of the monument site, was one of the last major actions of the northern Apache wars. There is great historic significance since this was the trail used by the military when Arizona was settled. Trail reconstruction on some of the upper sections has changed some of the route. Much of the trail parallels power lines. This trail provides access to the Railroad Tunnel Trail, which terminates at historic, uncompleted railroad tunnel and powder house remains. This is one of the best in Arizona and can be hiked all year round.

The trail drops quickly as it heads south, paralleling a set of power lines. At the second power pole, cross the wash on your left. As the Colonel Devin Trail descends and the forest of pine, fir and oak thins, you gain good, open views off the rim. Deadfall from old fires lies scattered throughout the area, so expect to duck under a fallen log or two, scramble over a couple more and detour around others.

Directions

From Payson:
Travel north on Highway 87 and turn right onto Forest Road 300, 12.2 miles east of Highway 87 to the Battle of Big Dry Wash Monument on the north side of Forest Road 300. The trail starts south of the road. Be sure to stay on the trail east of the power lines.
