Trail Information
The Halema’uma’u Trail descends 400 feet through rain forest to the caldera floor. The trail crosses the Kilauea Caldera to the Halema’uma’u Crater. This trail leads to the southern edge of the caldera where it joins the Crater Rim Trail. Hikers may return via Byron Ledge and Crater Rim Trail or retrace their steps. Sights of interest on this trail are plants, birds, insects, pahoehoe lava flows, steam vents, spatter ramparts, crater and caldera.
You should bring water and food. Prepare for hot, dry, wet and windy weather. Beware of sulfur fumes; people with heart and breathing problems should avoid this trail.
