Trail Information
The Halemau’u Trail starts at the Haleakala Crater Road in the native shrubland ecosystem and leads ten miles into the Haleakala Crater and across the crater floor. Hikers can choose to do a 2 mile round trip hike out to the edge of the valley and return, or can use this trail as a starting point for an all day hike.
After the first mile, the trail reaches the edge of the erosional valley and affords excellent views on a clear day. From this point, the trail descends switchbacks to the valley wall to the floor almost 1500 feet below. Four miles out the trail reaches Holua cabin and campsite (permits required for overnight stays). From Holua Cabin, Halemau’u Trail continues across the crater floor six more miles to Paliku Campground.
Directions
