Trail Information
The Canyon Overlook Trail heads on a one mile round trip from the eastern end of the Zion - Mt. Carmel Tunnel to an overlook of Pine Creek and lower Zion Canyon. This trail ascends approximately 150 feet in one half mile along a rock-strewn trail. The trails-end viewpoint offers views of the West and East Temples, Towers of the Virgin, the Streaked Wall and other prominent features of lower Zion Canyon. The trailside environment, quite different from that of Zion Canyon, features plants and animals surviving in a rock and sand habitat.
During the summer months hikers may experience extreme heat. If hiking the Canyon Overlook take water, sunscreen and a brimmed hat.
Caution: There are several steep drop-offs along this route, but most are contained by fencing. A series of uneven steps are cut into the sandstone at the start of this trail, followed by irregular rock and sand surfaces. Supervise children closely near vertical drop-offs.
Directions
From the South Entrance:
Drive north to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. Turn right on to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway and travel east, through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel to the trailhead on its east end.
