Trail Information
The Go John Trail circles rugged mountains and climbs over three saddles. It is a loop trail off of Trailhead #3.
From the trailhead, the Go John Trail climbs steadily gaining about 300 feet in elevation until it opens to the north. After this pass (about 0.8 miles), continue north for another 0.25 miles as the trail descends to a junction with the Overton Trail at 1.1 miles. Continue along a wash for about 0.4 more miles. Here another trail heads east for nearly a mile, then swings up to Gunsight Pass at just under 3 miles. The trail turns into a broad valley and begins climbing westerly over a ridge, which has good views. At 4.2 miles a jeep road leads to the final descent and then the parking lot at 4.8 miles. Total elevation gain is about 800 feet.
The Cave Creek Recreation Area’s trail system is mostly developed from old mining roads, so take extreme caution around abandoned mines.
