Road bicycling in Arizona can be undertaken in many areas, however most of these are open highways and as such are probably not the best place to cycle. There are however a few areas where you can cycle highway, protected. Most of them are not hard cycling areas, and most are not steep inclines but rather flat easy cycling areas.

Trail Information

Unlike many other parts of the United States, the Phoenix Metro area doesn’t have a great deal of paved country roads that are fit for road cycling. Fortunately, there are a few excellent rides in the area between Scottsdale, Fountain Hills and Cave Creek but you need to know where to look for them.

One of the best road rides in this area is the giant loop around McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Starting in North Scottsdale, his ride will take you near Pinnacle Peak. Then down a nearly 7 mile decent leading into Rio Verde.

Eventually, the ride leads past the tallest fountain in world in Fountain Hills and then heads back to Scottsdale on Shea Blvd.
