Located in the heart of north central Idaho, huddled against rugged peaks, deep canyons, dense forests, this remote wilderness characterizes the 2.2 million acre Nez Perce National Forest. From the dry, rugged canyons of the Salmon River to the moist cedar forests of the Selway drainage, the forest offers something for everyone. You will find a wide diversity of landforms and ecological systems ranging from the dry, rugged canyons of the Salmon River to the moist cedar forests of the Selway drainage. Because of this diversity, the Nez Perce National Forest offers something for everyone. This vast, diverse area is managed to provide a variety of goods and services including breathtaking scenery, wilderness, wildlife, fisheries, timber harvest, livestock grazing, mining, pristine water quality and a wide array of recreation opportunities. Due in large part to dramatic elevational differences, Nez Perce supports a wide variety of vegetation, from cedar groves to desert ecosystems. These extremes provide habitats for numerous and diverse wildlife populations.

The Nez Perce National Forest is best known for its wild character. Nearly half of the Forest is designated wilderness. It also sports two rivers popular with thrill-seeking floaters the Selway and the Salmon.

Weather/Climate
The weather in the Nez Perce National Forest varies tremendously with location and elevation. Summers tend to bring clear days, with afternoon thunderstorms possible. Daytime highs are normally warm to moderate, with relatively cool to cold nights, depending on elevation. Winter can bring cold temperatures with heavy snows, especially at the high elevations. Sunny days are common between winter storms.
