Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The “black” water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.

The water, colored so amazingly, is the result of fallen hemlock and red spruce trees, whose needles impart tannic acid into the water, coloring it a deep amber in color.

Davis and Elkins college, not far distant from Blackwater Falls state park, will offer you, while you are a visitor to Blackwater Falls, a Master Naturalist program, which requires 48 hours of classroom and field training as well as some volunteer work in the area.
