Reasons to Start Hiking

Hiking is a recreational activity of walking because we want to, not because we have to. In hiking, the journey is usually more important than the destination and the reason to take this journey will vary from person to person and from occasion to occasion. While there are many different reasons for hiking, most people enjoy hiking for the following reasons.

Hiking is an excellent form of exercise and will greatly improve your overall physical condition. The natural walking motion is a relatively low impact workout. You are also able to set the pace and length of your workout. Many people hike as a part of their overall fitness routine.

Hiking is a great way to explore nature. People enjoy hiking as it brings them back to nature. A hike can take you to some of the most beautiful places on earth and into contact with amazing plants and animals. You can see all that nature offers; from beaches and deserts, to woods and jungle forests, plains and prairies, to hills and mountains. All of these different hiking conditions have their own unique appeal.

Hiking is easy to start and it does not require much specialized gear. A solid pair of boots, some basic outdoor clothing and a small backpack is enough to get started on short day-hikes. Walking is a skill you possess from very early childhood and there isn’t much else to learn.

Hiking allows you to grow in knowledge and skills as you progress. In its easiest form hiking is a very safe walk using defined trails. In a more extreme form hiking could require mountaineering, survival and navigation skills.

Hiking is frequently the starting point for many other outdoor activities. Rock climbing, mountaineering, camping and many other outdoor activities require you to start out by hiking.

Hiking is usually a year round activity. Many people find hiking in different conditions one of the most appealing and challenging factors. The flowers in spring, the heat of a summer day, changing leaves in autumn or winter snow; one or all of these can appeal to you.

Hiking can be a great way to get away the everyday stress in your life or it could be an experience to share with others or something that you do all alone. Depending on your point of view hiking could be a way of relaxing or a way to test your own capabilities.
