One of the most common types of sinkers and lures are those made from lead materials.
The reason for this is the bulk that it adds to the otherwise lightweight jigs and buzzbaits as well asĀ sinkers.

One sure fire way to get exactly what you want in those sinkers or lures is to make it yourself and in reality its not all that hard to do.
Pouring your own lead means that you get the satisfaction of making it yourself, saving a buck most likely and customizing or creating the exact lure or sinker that you want.
Why would you bother doing this for something that only costs a few bucks? Basic satisfaction and the “getting the exact thing I want for my rigs” is just part of the reason.
Pouring your own lead isn’t expensive. It takes just some basic equipment, nothing really specialised and in the end run it does save money, mostly because lead is available from just about everywhere and much of it won’t cost more than a few pennies.
My husband goes to find old tire balancing weights, or askes about them at the tire store. Lots of autoservice places will save it.
You can start pouring your own lead for sinkers and lures with little more than some basices or a beginners kit designed for just that.
Lead molds and tackle supplies for making your own tackle will very often come with some instructions so you’re not alone in the dark when it comes time to start creating your own masterpieces. You can find jig molds as well as sinker molds on a site called Do It that will give you some ideas and some equipment to get you started.
As always, take care. Lead is of course not an edible material and you do want to be careful and follow the manufacturers instructions in melting and molding your own, but the end result is that you can save some money and get the lures you’ve been hunting for but couldn’t find.
Check ahead before you fish. Some areas do not permit lead sinkers or restrict their use.
